Are you a Huawei smartphone owner?
The US government added Huawei to it’s Entity list. This prevents US companies from conducting business with the tech giant Huawei. Essentially this meant Huawei smartphone owners will loose access to Google PlayStore and other Google services.
Reason for the Ban
The Trump administration banned Huawei because the company has the support of the Chinese government. Amidst rising tensions between the US and China, US was concerned Huawei devices would used to spy on the US and it’s allies. The executive order signed by Trump blocked US companies from doing business with foreign tech companies that pose a threat to national security.
However, the US government has issued a temporary 90-day license 2 days ago which enables Huawei smartphone users to download software updates and access Google apps.
Future for Huawei Smartphones
The future is still unsure for Huawei smartphone owners. Huawei is the second largest supplier of smartphones worldwide. Shares of Huawei and Google dropped last after the ban last week.
But Huawei have plans to use their own operating system if they are barred from using Android on smartphones. Google is not the only US company that has cut ties with Huawei. Other companies who have ties with Huawei such as Intel, Qualcomm and Broadcom have also ceased supplying parts and services to Huawei.
For Huawei smartphone owners, access to Google services is just temporary and the future is not too bright. The best thing to do would be switch to a different smartphone while you still access to Google apps and services.
